He passed in 1994 at 86 years old. Thank you for the nice comments and remembrances. My dad began teaching in Orleans Public Schools sometime I believe in his 40s. He was the only teacher in the system without a college degree but because he was classically trained and had been a life-long musician with good credentials he was allowed till he retired in his mid 60s. Our family still has pictures from his days there, at Lee, and McMain but God only knows between 6 siblings where they are. He really cherished these years and took great pride in his student's accomplishments. In fact, 2 of his former students who became professional musicians played a duet at his funeral. It was very moving and we were very pleased to see his "baton" passed.Admiral Pooh Bearhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06610025309829190432noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1245707806735509181.post-68729733502347009112022-06-04T12:44:18.762-07:002022-06-04T12:44:18.762-07:00Hi. Some of the pictures are incorrectly labeled. The signs in front of the classes are correct. The picture with the unknown teacher is my 3rd grade class. The teacher is Mrs. Marion Barnes. The picture below that is my second grade class and Miss Brennan was our teacher. I have very fond memories of LaSalle. The fair, the paper drives, Mrs. Davis the music teacher, and of course Mr. Levine. He had been the principal at McDonough 14(Jefferson Avenue near Magazine) during my first grade year. We came over to LaSalle in the fall of 71, when they moved the kids from Howard #1 to McDonough 14. It has been several different names since then, the last being Ben Franklin Science and Math Charter. When I was last in NOLA it was being renovated. Really fond memories of both places. I went to LaSalle Elementary School for kindergarten with Mrs. Stinchcomb and first grade with Mrs.Long as my teacher. 1965-67 and then we moved to the North Shore. We live on Eleanor Street off of St Charles and I used to walk to school all by myself although I do remember my mother standing on the corner watching because I had younger siblings that she was staying home with.
I remember my kindergarten teachers daughter was in my class. I also looked for the school, but somehow missed it. I had Ms. Brennan for 2, Ms. Streck for 3, Ms. DuFour for 4 and then Ms. Robinson for 6, can't remember 5 cause we had a substitute for a good part of the year. I see Mary Polinard posted (we were good friends) and Denise Perrin (I see Fran Perrin posted) I still miss to this day. I loved her family! I need to dig up photos and post them all. A few of my classmates were Russell Beard, John Fleeteood, Tommy Swayze, Ralph Straub, Ruth Sladovich, Lee Whorle, Christian Spagenberg, etc (and apologies for miss-spellings). I also was friends with Shelly Ford later in high school and I am married to Eileen Paddison who also went to LaSalle School, as did her sister Wendy and my brother Denis.

It is just so amazing to see again the names of so many people (or their siblings) that I once knew and have never forgotten. I am pretty sure that Jeanne Cabeceiras Hoffman who posted also lived on the base, our fathers were doctors there together, we lived on base housing. I recall Susie Cabeceiras was probably my age.

Unfortunately I can't recall a lot of other names, James in my K class, 1966, Kirsten in my 2nd grade class with Brennan 1968.

One of the more prominent memories I have was of a reading program, with different levels, and you kept a paper record, each page was a different color crayon, and you filled in each block, one for a book maybe, until you filled up the blocks, then you changed pages or colors. I remember I pushed to purple for the year.

And I also distinctly remember an end of year picnic being a big deal, and Mrs Brennan wrote the word PICNIC on the board, and erased a letter every time the class got out of control, with the vague threat we'd cancel the picnic.

I can't remember my K teacher, but I do remember she had a tall bookshelf. If she caught you with a toy from home, she'd confiscate it and throw the toy on the top of the bookshelf where it languished til the end of the year.

Jim(my) Crowe, croweje@me.comAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11937293871464505397noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1245707806735509181.post-20177919014393375332012-04-26T16:42:11.789-07:002012-04-26T16:42:11.789-07:00I posted earlier today - I'm sorry - my friend...I posted earlier today - I'm sorry - my friends name was Fran Perrin I think I put Perrier thinking of the street name!!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1245707806735509181.post-57454463948042902492012-04-26T13:04:15.760-07:002012-04-26T13:04:15.760-07:00I, along with my older brother and younger sister ...I, along with my older brother and younger sister went to LaSalle - I remember my teacher in 5th grade I believe falling from a chair and not coming back to class - I believe her spin was damaged. By 2009, with windows broken and weeds growing from the roof, it was placed on the Louisiana Landmarks Society's list of New Orleans' Nine Most Endangered Sites.

MacPhaille, who has developed hundreds of apartments and condos in New Orleans and elsewhere, impulsively outbid a private school and other would-be buyers to claim the old school from the Orleans Parish School Board in April 2011 for $2.45 million, about $1 million above the appraised value.....

...The final plan, which the City Planning Commission will consider at a public meeting this afternoon, calls for creating 13 two- and three-bedroom condos and one smaller unit for guests of the residents. The complex will be expanded to 53,000 square feet, and two new single-family houses will be built behind the main building. Each condo will have two or three off-street parking spaces....

http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2012/03/condos_planned_for_former_nocc.htmlOld Guy in Baton Rougenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1245707806735509181.post-21004107890615922882012-02-14T12:44:35.897-08:002012-02-14T12:44:35.897-08:00I am the developer that bought the school at aucti...I am the developer that bought the school at auction last year. Sad, most recently in 2010 to see the condition of LaSalle (roof caved in). Was a good school, with caring teachers.
