Wow! I went to La Salle Elementary from 1st Grade (Mrs. Long) to 4th Grade (Mme. DuFour) Some of my friends continued there after it became the NOCCA.

I also attended La Salle. Kinder through 5th grade. 1967-1973. 1973 was the first year of desegregation and blacks were bused to La Salle. That was the last year too. They then changed La Salle to a performing arts school. 1st grade was Ms. Long. I remember her. 4th grade was Ms. DuFour (the meanest of all the teachers there, but still a good teacher) 5th grade was Ms. Gassle.

Do you guys remember the paper drives on Friday mornings? I used to actually go and knock on neighbor’s doors and get their newspaper so our class could win. Man that was fun!

Paper drives! Nobody could forget those days. Newspaper and twine. That blue ribbon was the most prized possession on Perrier St.

Unfrigg'in believable!!!!!
I know you! All to well too. Haven't seen you in what??? 25 years! And you didn't mention my name too??? WOW! WOW ! WOW !
I'll email mail you for sure.
Here's something weird. As I look at the 2 pictures of the school, I can remember exactly how it smelled! I smell it now! Weird? How the basement and the cafeteria smelled. How the library in the basement smelled. How the huge boys restroom smell of the over use of Pine cleaner. Oh, and the teachers lounge? The teachers all smoked back then. Very smoky. I can remember how the stage in the auditorium looked. There was a moving heavy curtain in the middle of the auditorium. Remember playing tether ball, 4 square ball, and dodge ball.
Oh, on hot days, they only had the one moving fan on the wall above the front chalkboard. I couldn't wait sometime for that breeze to hit me.
Awesome friend! You are the best!

I went to LaSalle from Kindergarden through third grade. Then it closed. I remember all of those smells too! Mrs. Stinchcomb (sp) for K, Mrs. Long for First Grade, Mrs. Reese for Second Grade, and Mrs. Davis for Third. And I remember Mr. (Zolly) Levine who used to force feed us overcooked vegetables in the cafeteria. Remember the cloak rooms, tether ball, Mardi Gras parade around neighborhood... my favorite school of all.

I too attended La Salle. I remember the day it snowed and we went to the girls yard to play. We had track and Field day. lol A group of us used to play after school and either do Dungeon or other games. I remember most people from my class. I recently saw Hayes. We need to get a reunion for La Salle. Jules Brown was also in the class and was not mentioned. David Dawes, Mike lived on Jefferson and the list goes on. BTW I am Brian Weiss. Zolly Lavine was the principal when it closed. We sung a song to welcome hm back after a heart attack I think. Sang to the tune of Hello Dolly. I atteneded form K to 6.

Holy Crap! Thanks Mary Q for passing this on. This is Kurt Weller. I'm sure someone out there remembers the terror I was playing Kick the Can almost every day after school across the street from the school on Perrier. My house was just across the street next to the Hall's house! I went to LaSalle from 65-71 (K-6)The paper drives along the fence! Mounds of them. Ms. Long, Ms. Brennan (2nd grade, always caught me with candy I had bought from Mouledous (sp) grocery on Webster and Magazine), Ms Greenbaum, Ms Brooks (I loved her - no I really loved her), Ms Saucier, and Ms Robert (last two were sisters), but Ms Robert was sick in the 6th grade and we had one sub teacher after another. Too much.

I remember an awesome game we called "Blue Tag" that we played in the very back of the yard near by the 3 level haning bars.

Great memories.

Miss Brennan for 2nd grade with her hair pulled back in a tight bun, Mrs.Dufour for 4th...she had a slumber party for all the girls in her 4th grade class. Miss Sarredet and Robert were sisters teaching 5th and 6th. My very best friend there was Ellen Degeneres! We were the tether ball champions! Heidi Muller, Cindy Bailey, Fran Perrier come to mind right away. Mr Masenter was the Symphony instructor. I would love to hear from anyone! Jeanne Cabeceiras..I probably had a sibling in every grade during these years. We were a big family

What a nice surprise, to bump into this little site. Thanks for the neighborhood photos too. I don't know if what I get is "sad" or "mad" or something else, but I certainly shake my head and mutter indecipherable nothings when I pass by the beautiful old building. I left in '59 to go on to Country Day, the same year the principal Naomi Gardberg left to become headmaster of the newly opened Ben Franklin. That Webster area was a great neighborhood, good friends all around and you could bicycle to Wilson's for comic books, Saladino's or Mouledoux's for candy & stuff, Audubon Zoo concession stand to play Little Richard on the jukebox. And that pool! Thanks for keeping the memories on this little corner of the internet.

I attended LaSalle for kindergarten in 1960 left and then went back for 5th and 6th Grade. They had so many students for 5th Grade they decided to split the grade and put some of the 5th graders (me) into Mrs. Grassels sixth grade class. I definitely remember paper drive, tether ball, our champion girls cabbage ball team. Thank you Taylor Swayze for riding all the way back to school on your bike to get our lucky blue bat!! Do you all remember learning the May Pole dance in 6th grade for the fair? Our fair was rained out that year so it was held inside the school. We ended up doing the Maypole at our 6th grade graduation. I took violin with Mr. Masinter, loved him. My friends were Page Sladovich, Stephanie Ellis,Shelley Ford, Nina Fleetwood, Marty Creech. Remember the Christmas program we would have? I was was one of the lucky sixth grade girls who was chosen to clean the teachers lounge every day. We enjoyed it because they had a/c in the lounge. We'd goof off and dance around and the office would call us on the intercom and tell us to stop playing around, clean and get back to class! I loved that school.

I think I know some of you guys! I, too, miss La Salle. It was the best school I ever went to. I even made a website myself honoring La Salle. As a matter of fact I had Ms. Long, Ms. Brennan, Ms. DuFour. I am currently with a girl I was in 6th grade with at La Salle. We hooked up again after 35 years! How wild is that? I would love to email some of the people I went to school with at La Salle and see what you are all up to. I remember Patrick Houlihan, too. I also remember thoae paper drives and that purple ink (ditto) we use to smell when the teacher handed out tests. My name is Michael Newell if anyone remembers me. I am with Terri Herring and we are happily together now in Colorado Springs. Hope to hear from some of you. You can contact me via my website at www.michaelnewellphotography.com

I went to LaSalle back in the days of 65-67. I was there for Hurricane Betsy. I remember Catherine Polinard. Her father was my minister at St. Charles Avenue Christian Church. She had brothers Tommy, Larry, and one other sister. Catherine, if you see my post, you can reach me at richard.rodgers@pac.dodea.edu ... It would be great to hear from you.

The lady with the violin class (I forget her name) but she was my violin teacher.

This page is just tearing me up. I never expected to have such a flood of memories.

I attended in the early 60s and remember Ms Long, Ms Saucier (she was so pretty and nice)but my memory bank goes blank after that...lol..I think it was the 5th grade teacher that fell off of a chair trying to fix the tv and hurt her back and we had a sub come in for the rest of the year, I believe,, Ms Plotkins..? Wow, that was a long long time ago... If I had the money, I would buy the building...

I am Terri. I attended LaSalle 4th through 6th grade. I had Ms. Farmer and Ms.Gisselle. I remember everyone that was in those classes. Michael and I are returning to New Orleans. I had come home in Jan of 2005 and was displaced , thanks to Katrina. I remember the paper drives and the people and it made me sad to see how the place has fallen into such decay. We are so excited to be returning, Michael, after 35 years and me after five and here and there before that. New Orleans is home and we're coming home to stay!!!

Hi all, I didn't go to LaSalle, for that matter I'm not even originally from New Orleans, but I love here now. I attend Tulane University, and really enjoy exploring this fantastic city. I stumbled upon the LaSalle school one day and I have been mesmerized by it since, so I was wondering if anyone here could give me some information on it.

My name is Emmett Wright and I attended LaSalle Elementary from 1950 -1953 in the 4th through 6th grades. My nickname was Mac. I lived on Henry Clay Ave. and some of my classmates were Susan Moffitt, Thad Bush, Bill Osborne, Eddie Lada and Tommy Adams. There was a Terry, also. I attended McMain for a half year and then we moved from New Orleans and I grew up in Miami, Florida. I became a professional trombonist in the Navy Band and retired from service in 1980. I continue to perform in Central Florida. We had some good times growing up at LaSalle.

I attended LaSalle for 1st grade (1968-69) and 2nd grade (1969-70). My teacher both years was Mrs. Starnes. I noticed that someone mentioned Tony Schram in their comments. Tony was my best friend then and I am trying to re-establish contact with him. If anyone knows anything about his current whereabouts or how I might get in touch with him, please write me: enzo6@aol.com. I have many fond memories of my time at LaSalle. My best to all of you.

La Salle from 2nd To 5th were the happiest years of my life. Mrs Robert was my favorite teacher of all times. I wear my hair in a bun ala Ms Brennan. I remember competing to take her ice cold coke to the teacher's lounge. The autumn fairs at night were the best. Hello to Chris Hunter, Scott Ratteree, Steven Singerman, Conrad Hastings, Jeanne Cabaseiras, Tina Rottersman, Linda Galler, Cindy Bailey. I miss NOLA after being away nearly 30 years! I know what it means to miss New Orleans but I loved La Salle the most. Where are the school records? Mrs Dolphin was the principal. Mrs Grady the secretary. Bring it back.

I attended LaSalle from the 2nd grade (Ms. Able) through the 5th grade (Ms. Saradet) with Ms. Roberts and Ms. Tarleton in between. That was 1952-1955. I lived at what was then the U.S. Marine Hospital complex at State St. and Tchoupitoulas. My father was a doctor, and we moved to New Orleans when the U.S. Marine Hospital on Ellis Island, NY was closed. I enjoyed New Orleans and LaSalle probably the most of any of the places I lived and attended school while growing up. Currently living near Charlotte, I've been back several times since Katrina...still love the town and always drive by LaSalle when I'm there.

La Salle was a magic primary school. Stephanie Ellis and I walked to and from school for many years. Mrs. Gooch put me on her knee and gave me a loving hug when I cried the first day of school in third grade and Mrs. Gassle's eyes welled-up as she bid me farewell in sixth. I have such fond memories of the teachers; I felt they truly loved us.
Remember dancing the Scottish Fling in fourth grade for the fair?

Amazing. Love the pics! I went to LaSalle 4th through 6th grade (1959 - 1962). Lived in N.O. from '59 to '77. Have been back several times. Sad, most recently in 2010 to see the condition of LaSalle (roof caved in). Was a good school, with caring teachers. Had forgotten about the fair; even though went back, while in McMain, as volunteer and manned the cotton candy machine! Went on to Franklin, Tulane, LSU (DVM) and now in MD working at NCI and have 3 grown kids. Diana C.

Condos planned for former NOCCA building Uptown

Published: Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 8:00 AM

By Bruce Eggler, The Times-Picayune

...For developer Jim MacPhaille, however, the chief attraction of the building in the 6000 block of Perrier Street was not that it housed the nationally known New Orleans Center for Creative Arts from 1973 to 2000.

It was that MacPhaille himself was a student there when it was still LaSalle Elementary School.

After NOCCA moved out of the Italianate-style school, built in 1901 and expanded in 1926, it was left to deteriorate. By 2009, with windows broken and weeds growing from the roof, it was placed on the Louisiana Landmarks Society's list of New Orleans' Nine Most Endangered Sites.

MacPhaille, who has developed hundreds of apartments and condos in New Orleans and elsewhere, impulsively outbid a private school and other would-be buyers to claim the old school from the Orleans Parish School Board in April 2011 for $2.45 million, about $1 million above the appraised value.....

...The final plan, which the City Planning Commission will consider at a public meeting this afternoon, calls for creating 13 two- and three-bedroom condos and one smaller unit for guests of the residents. The complex will be expanded to 53,000 square feet, and two new single-family houses will be built behind the main building. Each condo will have two or three off-street parking spaces....

I, along with my older brother and younger sister went to LaSalle - I remember my teacher in 5th grade I believe falling from a chair and not coming back to class - I believe her spin was damaged. Fran Perrier was my good friend and I remember Kit and Lindsey Baker (they were in my brother's class but I loved their names) and Chuck Probst. I remember much of what you all share and of course Mr. Masenta being our violin teacher. I loved him and remember him coming down to the cafeteria to have lunch with all the kids. FUN TIMES and a great school. I am Joda Fuxan. (brother Johnny and sister is Dayle)

I attended LaSalle from ~ 66-68 (K, 1st [Long], 2nd [Brennan]

I lived on Tschoupitoulas, then moved onto the base, was a Coast Guard base I believe. I am pretty sure that Jeanne Cabeceiras Hoffman who posted also lived on the base, our fathers were doctors there together, we lived on base housing. I recall Susie Cabeceiras was probably my age.

Unfortunately I can't recall a lot of other names, James in my K class, 1966, Kirsten in my 2nd grade class with Brennan 1968.

One of the more prominent memories I have was of a reading program, with different levels, and you kept a paper record, each page was a different color crayon, and you filled in each block, one for a book maybe, until you filled up the blocks, then you changed pages or colors. I remember I pushed to purple for the year.

And I also distinctly remember an end of year picnic being a big deal, and Mrs Brennan wrote the word PICNIC on the board, and erased a letter every time the class got out of control, with the vague threat we'd cancel the picnic.

I can't remember my K teacher, but I do remember she had a tall bookshelf. If she caught you with a toy from home, she'd confiscate it and throw the toy on the top of the bookshelf where it languished til the end of the year.

Hi, my name is Daniel Swords and I went to LaSalle School in the 5th and 6th grades (Mrs Sarredet and Mrs Robert) in 1963 and 1964 (I think - but it was long ago). A few of my classmates were Russell Beard, John Fleeteood, Tommy Swayze, Ralph Straub, Ruth Sladovich, Lee Whorle, Christian Spagenberg, etc (and apologies for miss-spellings). I also was friends with Shelly Ford later in high school and I am married to Eileen Paddison who also went to LaSalle School, as did her sister Wendy and my brother Denis.

It is just so amazing to see again the names of so many people (or their siblings) that I once knew and have never forgotten.

I cannot believe I just found this blog. I went to LaSalle 2-6 grade (and I had two siblings who attended as well). I loved LaSalle--the Mardi Gras parade was my favorite. I had Ms. Brennan for 2, Ms. Streck for 3, Ms. DuFour for 4 and then Ms. Robinson for 6, can't remember 5 cause we had a substitute for a good part of the year. I see Mary Polinard posted (we were good friends) and Denise Perrin (I see Fran Perrin posted) I still miss to this day. I loved her family! I need to dig up photos and post them all. Jackie Sweeney

I lived on Webster St. just south of Magazine, and attended Kindergarten (Mrs. Fink) and First Grade (Mrs. Long)1961-1963. I remember the huge slide in the large Kindergarten classroom; the Paper Drives! Wow...havent' thought about that in years, but I remember the piles and piles of papers on the sidewalks. My favorite memory was the May Day celebrations: the basketball hoops were mounted on moveable steel poles, and they doubled as the May Poles.

Something made me look up LaSalle Elementary School tonight. I went to LaSalle Elementary School for kindergarten with Mrs. Stinchcomb and first grade with Mrs.Long as my teacher. 1965-67 and then we moved to the North Shore. We live on Eleanor Street off of St Charles and I used to walk to school all by myself although I do remember my mother standing on the corner watching because I had younger siblings that she was staying home with.
I remember my kindergarten teachers daughter was in my class. Her name was Sally Stinchcomb. I do remember a couple of other names.
Did anyone else here go to school with me?

I attended LaSalle from 1971 to 1973 for second and third grade. Some of the pictures are incorrectly labeled. The signs in front of the classes are correct. The picture with the unknown teacher is my 3rd grade class. The teacher is Mrs. Marion Barnes. The picture below that is my second grade class and Miss Brennan was our teacher. I have very fond memories of LaSalle. The fair, the paper drives, Mrs. Davis the music teacher, and of course Mr. Levine. He had been the principal at McDonough 14(Jefferson Avenue near Magazine) during my first grade year. We came over to LaSalle in the fall of 71, when they moved the kids from Howard #1 to McDonough 14. It has been several different names since then, the last being Ben Franklin Science and Math Charter. When I was last in NOLA it was being renovated. Really fond memories of both places.

My father, Mr. Masinter, was the orchestra teacher. He passed in 1994 at 86 years old. Thank you for the nice comments and remembrances. My dad began teaching in Orleans Public Schools sometime I believe in his 40s. He was the only teacher in the system without a college degree but because he was classically trained and had been a life-long musician with good credentials he was allowed till he retired in his mid 60s. Our family still has pictures from his days there, at Lee, and McMain but God only knows between 6 siblings where they are. He really cherished these years and took great pride in his student's accomplishments. In fact, 2 of his former students who became professional musicians played a duet at his funeral. It was very moving and we were very pleased to see his "baton" passed.
